There is many a home owner out there today that could use a home update or a complete overhaul. Maybe due to outdated wiring, plumbing, or fixtures or maybe because the home you started out in no longer functions properly or efficiently to meet your families needs. Some home owners may have been victims of natural or unforeseen disaster and found themselves unable to afford needed repairs that can no longer be ignored. So if your home is in need of remodeling how do you decide of you should make the repairs or move to a new and better functioning home?
- Make a list of what needs to be done and how much it would cost.
The key factor to deciding if remodeling is even an option is to determine if you have the funds to spend on the project and if you are willing to spend the time money and inconvenience of a remodel project. Remember to factor in not just cost of material but of labor and unseen surprises that may pop up. If you are thinking about remodeling to move to a bigger home you will need to factor in Realtor and decorating costs. Would it be possible to get the permits needed to add on to your home?
- Is your home is good condition?/Does it have good bones.
If you have major structural issues it may be more cost effective to move on to a new home than to stay and fix a crumbling foundation or sinking floors.
- How attached are you to the neighborhood?
Moving may mean locating to another neighborhood. Are you willing to relocate your kids to another school or make a longer commute to work? Are there homes for sale in your neighborhood that are affordable? These are all questions you may want to ask before relocating.
- What is the market like in your neighborhood?
Are homes selling? What condition are homes with comparable features selling in? Chance is they are up to date and ready to move in properties. If you decide moving is the best option instead of remodeling you will need to do some work to sell on the traditional market.
If all signs are pointing to sell and you do not have the budget to make your current home into what works for your family or even to update and get it ready to sell there is a way to sell your home as-is without making any changes and that is to sell to a cash home buyer. There are options but you might be able to get more for your home with just a little inexpensive staging.
